What a difference a little light change makes...

"On a Clear Day" 36x48" oil on deep canvas - painted in 2022 and hung in my livingroom, but still actually unfinished.
Three photos of it taken minutes apart in different light positions outside in the late afternoon. The fourth photo is how it looks under my studio lights.
Note to self: check how the painting looks where it is actually going to hang in my living room and under various light conditions that exist there.
Self critique:  The light direction in the painting is unclear or diffuse. Time of day? Sun direction? Shadows?
Willi critique: Where are the animals? Cows, deer, birds, etc. "but it's fine as it is too." (i.e., don't mess it up!)

Heidi is looking better now, but I am not sure who the farmer is yet.
However, I am moving on to the colour layer in burnt sienna and ultramarine blue to make those gorgeous greys, browns and blues.

The "Swallowtail Heaven" is framed and hanging now so it can cure in place. I see a few items to correct when I take it out of the frame for varnishing. The edges need to be painted dark for this kind of frame and the sky is not looking as smooth as I would like it to be. Details, details.

Final (maybe) colour adjustments on the "Swallowtail Heaven", 18x36", oil on canvas, 2025.
Milking Heidi - this is the beginning of the grisaille layer - patches of white and several grey values.

Then wait a while and blend the edges, making sure there are no paint ridges that will confuse later layers.
OK, there are a few places to fix when I come back, e.g. the lost back leg, the milking stool, etc.

Well now, what should I paint while waiting for these ones to dry....  Maybe a pastel underpainting for  a monochromatic oil. I am thinking of burnt sienna and ultramarine blue, which makes a range of rich greys and darks.
OK, the swallowtail butterfly is dressed in his tux. So I will let this dry for a few days to see what happens when the transparent paints dry.

The monarch butterflies are now looking a little higher over the ground. I put a whitish glaze over the landscape, which will make the butterflies stand out more when they are bright orange and black in the next layer.
